HOW TO APPLY FOR STATE JOBS
Table of Contents |
Step 1 - Find Out About Job Opportunities
- Review job postings for positions in which you are interested. Job postings describe the work, minimum qualifications required, type of test that will be used, and job location. Applications are accepted only when there is a job posting.
- Review the minimum qualifications to assess whether you meet the requirements. Note: Each minimum qualification must be met in order to be determined “Qualified”. If you do not possess ALL of the minimum qualification requirements, your application will be rated “Not Qualified” and will not be considered further.
- If the minimum qualifications state “experience”, you must possess experience in that area.
- If the minimum qualifications state “knowledge”, you must possess education, training and/or experience in that area.
- If a Selective Requirement is included on the job posting, this is an additional qualification requirement that must be met to qualify.
- If there is a Preferential Qualification included on the job posting, this is a desirable qualification that does not have to be met to qualify.
- If the minimum qualifications state “experience”, you must possess experience in that area.
- Applications are accepted only when there is a job posting. Resumes are accepted only when accompanied with a completed application.
- Job Postings are announced for a minimum of 15 calendar days.
- Applications must be received by the closing date.
- Job postings identify the agency recruiting for the vacancy and the addresses of where to submit a completed paper application. Applications submitted online go direct to the recruiting agency.
- Job Postings are added to the web site regularly. It is suggested to check the web site at least once a week. You may contact the Human Resource Management Ofice to register for Career Search that will automatically contact you by mail when job postings are opened.
Step 2 - Completing Your Application
- The State of Delaware encourages applicants to apply online.
- Complete a separate application for each job posting. Print or copy the completed application for your reference.
- Keep records of the job posting number and the recruiting agency for reference should you want to make inquiries. Please contact the recruiting agency when you have inquiries.
- Paper applications need to be completed with clearly written type or print.
- Complete the Minimum Qualifications Summary on each job application. If you do not address each Minimum Qualification separately on the minimum qualification page of the application, it could result in being determined “Not Qualified”. For each Minimum Qualification, number and describe in detail your training and experience as accurately and completely as possible including month/year, start and end dates for each period of employment.
- Submit Online (Preferred Method), mail, hand deliver or fax your completed application to one of the addresses listed on the job posting. Applications must be received by the closing date.
Step 3 - Evaluating and Rating Applications
- The recruiting agency evaluates each application against the minimum qualification requirements and any selective requirements. Applications determined “qualified” progress to the next step in the process.
- When a written test is required, you are mailed instructions on when and where to report for the written test.
- When a rating of training and experience is used to score and rank qualified applications, your application is evaluated based on the description of education, training and/or experience you possess in relation to the particular job vacancy.
- Veterans and disabled veterans shall receive 5 additional and 10 additional points respectively for initial employment only, provided they have obtained a passing score and that they represent a copy of their DD 214 form and, if applicable, a copy of the VA Approved Disability including claim number. Unremarried widows or widowers of deceased veterans are also eligible for these points.
- You are notified by the recruiting agency of the results of the evaluation of your application for the minimum qualification requirements, test score and/or rating of training and experience.
- Qualified applicants are placed on register, i.e., a list of eligible job candidates, in rank order by score or alphabetical order when scoring is not required.
- Your name will remain valid for one year from the date that your employment application was received. It is important to keep the recruiting agency informed of any changes to your address or phone number so that you can be reached when contacted.
- The recruiting agency provides the hiring manager with a certification list containing the names of the top 15 or 15% (whichever is greater) of applicants on the register.
- The hiring manager decides which candidates to interview and makes a selection from the certification list.
